What’s up families?  Today I want to discuss with you the topic of “Naysayers”.

Artists and producers, no matter how deeply you are involved in your pursuit of achieving a career in the music industry, no matter how talented you may or may not be, one thing is for sure.  There will always be Naysayers out there trying to prevent you from walking the path that God intended for your life.  This holds true no matter what industry you are trying to pursue.  You can be into fashion modeling and there will always be someone telling you that you are not pretty or handsome enough.  You can be an athlete and the Naysayers will be there telling you that you are not strong enough, fast enough or passionate enough.  The urban world refers to these types of people as “haters” but Naysayers have been around long before that term was coined.

Don’t get me wrong, people are entitled to their opinions.  Not everyone is going to like your music or be willing to support you and guess what?  They don’t have to.  To people who are not in your inner circle that cast negative opinions about your art, it probably doesn’t even affect you because their opinions don’t matter to you anyway.  But, what happens when the Naysayers are the actually the people who are closest to you, your family, close friends, significant other, co-workers, etc.?  Now hearing negative opinions from these people will hit you where it hurts because for most of us musicians, we pursue music because we want the people closest to us to be proud of our achievements.  We fight to pursue an almost impossible dream so that we may one day be able to savor the victory of that battle to gain success with our loved ones.  In some cases, we view achieving a career in music as a means for bettering the situation for our families and loved ones so when we don’t get their support, it’s natural to feel discouraged, hopeless, depressed, or even like a failure.

Well folks, I’m here to tell you that the music industry is not nice.  This is an industry where only the strong survive.  You are up against people that live and breathe this stuff everyday of their lives and they will do whatever it takes to secure a position amongst the world’s musical elite.  No one will feel sorry for you if you are having a bad day, have writers block, didn’t get a placement, got boo’d at during your performance or because you weren’t feeling well.  You must understand that Naysayers do what they do because your efforts and your successes are something that they wish they themselves could accomplish but they can’t because they were not gifted with the talents that you have.  The word for this is “envy”.  It’s common for those closest to you to disguise themselves as supporters when in fact, they are your biggest nemesis because although they may want to see you do well, they just don’t want you to do better than them.

So next time you get discouraged by a Nay Sayer, take a step back and look at how far you’ve come in your pursuit of a music career and push on because you never know when your time to shine will come.  Do not allow the infection of one bad apple spoil the whole bunch.  Learn to block out those negative opinions and use that energy to become an even better artist, business person, and overall more well-rounded individual.  Never give up on your dreams because thoughts do become reality.  If you can’t get positivity from the outside world, then look within and discover your own beauty.  Appreciate yourself, put value behind your talents and convince yourself that you are the greatest to ever do it.  It all starts within because if you can’t convince yourself that you are worthy or stardom, then how do you expect to convince anyone else.  Get comfortable with criticism and being told “NO!” because some of the most successful people in the world today were told that they couldn’t do it or that they would become a failure.

I understand the struggle in a real way, have been discouraged many times and told that I would fail.  Fortunately,

I’ve pushed past the Naysayers and continue to work on my craft and develop my business.  My fan base continues to grow and new relationships continue to be built.  I busy myself dealing with those who will benefit my efforts and simply have no time to entertain the negative thoughts of Naysayers.  Trust me, if you do this it will get to the point to where you don’t even hear their tiny little voices anymore because they’ll be drowned out by the screams of fans reciting the lyrics to your hit song and praising your name.
